Change of street names in the town of Geneva – 1st volley | City of Geneva

In connection with the Equality week

2020, organized from February 28 to March 8, and to enhance the contributions of Geneva citizens to the history of our canton, the City of Geneva will file a file at the Cantonal Nomenclature Commission (CCN) for Change the name of 16 streets, squares, parks and paths on municipal territory.

Accepted by the Grand Council in 2019, requesting the change in name of 100 Geneva streets within three years.

Based on the biographies developed as part of the 100elles*project, 16 names of women or women’s groups corresponding to the criteria set by the CCN were selected. Scientists, engineers, pedagogues, philanthropists, activists, politicians, business chefs, workers or anonymousthey all marked the story of Geneva. An anniversary of women’s suffrage obliges, special attention was paid to those who have campaigned for the right to vote and eligibility for women in Geneva.

With this change of name and as the mayor of Geneva explains, “the city intends to perform a strong act, aimed at recognizing the fact that the Genevans are full -fledged citizens, who have contributed to our collective history, and correct a Injustice that has continued too long, that of the invisibility of women in the public sphere ”.
