    Extreme heat: the City of Geneva activates its heatwave plan | City of Geneva

    According to the forecast of the Swiss weather service, this heatwave episode in the Geneva basin will continue until Wednesday 23 August. As reiterated by the cantonal medical service, high temperatures represent a significant danger to well-being and health, in particular along older people. During of extreme heat, certain precautions must be taken, in particular drinking periods plenty of water.

    The specific support provided by the Social Services staff involves a daily phone call to anyone registered to ensure they are in good health. It is an effective tool for identifying situations of isolation. If any symptoms are detected, the relevant healthcare services take over. The City’s heatwave plan is thus founded on collaboration with the Cantonand in particular with imagevarious municipal services and Pharma Geneva.

    It should be noted that a heatwave is declared when the average temperature is 25 degrees or more for at least 3 consecutive days.

    Furthermore, the Social Service teams do rounds to pass on prevention messagesdeliver drinks and provide assistance to people living on the street.

    Cinema, swilling pool and cool locations

    For the first time this year, the City of Geneva is providing new services free of charge to help senior citizens cope with these particularly high temperatures. Older people living in the municipality can make free use of Varembé swimming pool in the morning. During the afternoon, they can enjoy the cool, refreshing atmosphere in the different cinemas (Scala, North-South and City) while watching the movies free of charge until 6 pm

    What’s more, Senior City and the Geneva Museum of Ethnography will open their doors wide offering both a cool location and the support of professionals.
