Since the 1970s, Geneva has been the scene of numerous mobilizations for the rights and visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex, queer and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTIQ+) people..
This tremendous dynamism has been perpetuated in a network of associations and collectives that is still very active today. He contributed to make our city a pioneer in the fight against discrimination and for the respect and promotion of human rights.
A series of events
Aware of the value of this heritage, in 2019 the City launched the “LGBTIQ+ Memories” program Who aims to raise awareness of the rich local LGBTIQ+ history, but also the issues of identification, preservation and valorization of its archives. As part of this program, the City of Geneva offers a series of events each year in October, LGBTIQ+ History Month, in collaboration with numerous associative and institutional partners.
THE 2023 program will begin on October 5 by a afterwork at the Museum of Art and History who will revisit its collections from a queer angle, with a round table and performancein collaboration with the association Lestimethe collective Our History Matters and the House of History. It will continue the next day at Maurice Chalumeau Center on Sexualities Sciences with a day of meetings and workshops which will allow us to reflect on the issues of memory linked to the history of HIV/AIDS and how to keep archives alive.
Finally, the Protest archives will open their feminist and lesbian funds to City staff on October 10before the launch on October 14 of a new LGBTIQ+ Memoirs Prize, offered by the City of Geneva and which will reward one of the historical films programmed as part of the Everybody’s Perfect festivalwith the aim of encouraging film production and distribution in this area and reminding people that LGBTIQ+ history is an integral part of the history of our societies.
