Winner of the Geneva Library restoration and extension competition | City of Geneva

    The winner of the competition

Chosen unanimously, it was the LARNAGE project by the group of Portuguese architects VASSCO, ACE and civil engineer Adao da Fonseca – Engenheiros Consultores, Lda which won the jury’s first prize.

    Landscape redefinition

The winning project is characterized by the landscape redefinition of the layout of the Cour des Bastions as well as a search for reinterpretation of the building’s relationship with the Parc des Bastions and Rue de-Candolle.

The jury was particularly won over by the winners’ choice to replace the two annexes of the BGE with two new contemporary pavilions light and transparent. These new constructions suggest a turnaround of the building towards the park, they thus highlight its rear side and justify the removal of the current annexes.

    Space returned to the public

The noble spaces of the restored historic building are returned to the public. The project ensures universal accessibility to the BGE and distinguishes between public and staff entrances. It gives pride of place to spaces reserved for the public by enhancing the interior spaces and offers versatile meeting places.

The library is designed as a place for study, meetings and exchanges, accessible to the public and open to the park, conducive to the deployment of its cultural and scientific programming. A place whose architectural concept also reflects the institution’s desire to open clearly onto the city while respecting the strong heritage elements of the existing building.
