Start of work on the Vernets school group | City of Geneva

A friendly space open to the neighborhood

Located in the center of the plot of the former PAV barracks, which will accommodate nearly 1,500 housing units, the Vernets school group aims to become a real place of conviviality and sharing. Beyond its primary purpose as a school, the building will offer public facilities open to future residents of the neighborhood.

The project of architecture office Liechti Graf Zumsteg (Aargau) offers a primary school designed as a light structure and great transparency. Its low size recalls the existing artisanal structures in the neighborhood and creates a contrast with the future housing buildings on the site.

    Composition of the school group

The school group will be organized as follows:

    • In the basement: the physical education roomon a double height, will benefit from two access points, a main entrance and direct access from the upper floors for students.
    • On the ground floor: divided into four sectors separated by galleries and transparent passages, the premises will include a school restaurant, games and rhythm rooms, as well as extracurricular and administrative premises. They will be accessible on one level and will be available to residents outside of school opening hours.
    • On the 1st floor: the 16 classrooms will be organized around a generous central space, able to accommodate complementary learning activities.
    • The roof of the building will be made up of a succession of gable roofs, the shortest of which will be glazed to guarantee overhead light on the classroom floor. A photovoltaic installation of more than 1,000 m2 will be installed, covering the school’s electricity needs, as well as a adapted vegetation improving summer climatic comfort.
