The City of Geneva adopts its first external relations strategy | City of Geneva

The process of developing an external relations strategy is part of the 2020-2025 legislative program of the Administrative Council.

Its objective is to set the priorities of the City in terms of external relations and to create a reference framework for the entire administration.

This new strategy highlights a Geneva welcoming, multicultural and open to the world, whose values shine at the local, national and international levels, against the backdrop of an unwavering commitment to the promotion of fundamental human rights and international law. By leveraging its history, its influence and its environment, Geneva aspires to maintain and strengthen its position as a reference center for global multilateral governance.

This strategy defines how the City plans develop the most effective means of action to promote its values and interests within the various bodies in which it participates as part of its external relations.

As part of this new instrument, the City of Geneva has identified three main axes
    strategic.

    1. Promoting the values of the City

The City of Geneva defends and promotes values of equality and diversity. In line with its humanitarian tradition, it is committed to international solidarity by supporting cooperation projects, in partnership with organizations active on the ground and by financing humanitarian aid interventions. Furthermore, by promoting access to international Geneva for advocacy activities for representatives of civil society from developing countries and governments of least developed countries, the City contributes to the promotion of human rights and the resilience of disadvantaged populations.

    2. Strengthening and promoting international Geneva

Alongside the Confederation and the canton, the City contributes to the implementation of Swiss host state policy and plays an essential role in maintaining attractive framework conditions for welcoming and maintaining international players. The City has numerous levers in this area, such as ease of access to the administration, the type of office space and conference rooms available, security, public space and green spaces, public policies in early childhood or extracurricular matters, or even cultural and sporting offerings.

    3. The affirmation of Geneva as a reference center for urban diplomacy

Geneva actively participates in the “city diplomacy” and aspires to assert itself as a reference center in this area. Geneva is committed to carrying the voice of cities in multilateral forums and to playing a leading role within city networks of which it is a member, which offer opportunities for collaboration with actors and spaces dealing with global issues of interest to Geneva.

The City will communicate regularly on the implementation of the measures and the achievement of the objectives specified in this strategy, both with local authorities and with Geneva and international target audiences.
