Administrative Council expresses concern over humanitarian situation in Gaza and supports UNRWA | City of Geneva

Through this gesture, the City Authorities wish to recall the need to provide sufficient means to one of the only actors still able to provide substantial assistance to local populationswhile its funding has been widely threatened in recent months.

As the main humanitarian organization in the Gaza Strip, UNRWA is the backbone of the aid operation there, running shelters, distributing food, providing primary health care and coordinating logistics to humanitarian deliveries. UNRWA’s action is all the more crucial at a time when humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to deteriorate worryingly.

In fact, it is estimated that nearly 450,000 people have been forcibly displaced since the evacuation of part of Rafah began on May 6. The fate of these refugees, forced to flee without a clear destination while no longer any place in the Gaza Strip can be considered safe in the current situation, is particularly worrying at a time when the delivery of humanitarian aid in the territory is, in fact, no longer assured.

Beyond the humanitarian question, the Administrative Council is also alarmed by the extreme polarization which is affecting our societies thanks to the worsening of the situation on the ground, a problem which can only intensify as long as a de-escalation of the conflict will not be initiated.

The Administrative Council continues to call for a resolution of the conflict which will protect local populations and will prevent a new conflagration in the future. He recalls the need for an immediate ceasefire, an essential prerequisite to ensure both the release of the hostages and unhindered access of humanitarian aid to the entire Gaza Strip.
