Conference “Museums and power(s)” | City of Geneva

    Consult the conference program

Ten years ago, at the instigation of the Department of Culture of the City of Geneva, Geneva museums held general meetings and questioned themselves during a national conference on “The challenges of museums in the 21st century”. This year it’s on their social and societal utility that the museums of Geneva have chosen to question themselves, through a reflection on their power(s).

    What powers?

Symbolic power, shared power and co-construction, power to transform the world… but also incarnation of the power of the State, tool for regulating knowledge and uses, civic forum… So many forms of power, direct or indirect, that museums have exercised or still practicing.

The rebalancing of powers, particularly since the start of the 21st century (#MeToo movement, recognition of new sexual or gender identities, communities, etc.), has led to a rereading of official histories, a revision of the orientation of collections, developments, practices or governance.
