Extreme heat: the City of Geneva activates its heatwave plan | City of Geneva

According to Swiss Weather forecasts, a heatwave episode should continue in the Geneva basin until August 1 at 8 p.m.

High temperatures present a hazard for the well-being and health of seniors and eldersbut also more vulnerable such as pregnant women and people with disabilities.

During heatwaves, precautions must be taken, with good hydration as a priority.

Remember that a heatwave is declared when average temperatures (day/night) are equal to or greater than 25°C for 5 consecutive days, or equal to or greater than 27°C for 3 consecutive days.

“These preventive measures make it possible to reduce risks and limit complications, underlines Mayor Christina Kitsos, in charge of the Department of Social Cohesion and Solidarity. They clearly demonstrate the authorities’ desire to implement concrete actions to face global warming, the consequences of which are particularly felt in urban areas and for the most vulnerable populations.”

    Individual monitoring

THE concrete support provided by the employees of the Social Service takes the form of a phone contact with registered people, in order to ensure their health and well-being. It constitutes an effective tool for detecting possible situations of isolation. If necessary, the relay is passed to the competent health services.

The City’s heatwave plan is based on collaborations with the Cantonnotably imad, various municipal services and Pharma Genève.

Free entry to the swimming pool and cinema screenings in the cool

For the second year in a row, the City of Geneva is offering free services to help people aged 65 and over residing on municipal territory to get through these particularly high temperatures.

They can go free of charge in the morning to the swimming pools des Vernets and Varembé.

In the afternoon, it’s in the cinemas Scala, Nord-Sud, City and, from this year, Cinélux (only Wednesday and Thursday at Cinélux), that they can find a little freshness and attend the screenings for free until 7 p.m.

    Cool places map

A map lists the cool places, with glasses of water available, able to accommodate the most vulnerable people (seniors, pregnant women, people with disabilities) during heatwave periods. These include EMS, shopping center cafeterias and municipal premises such as Cité seniors, the Ethnography Museum or the Vernets swimming pool hall. Furthermore, Cité Seniors remains open and offers, in addition to a cool place, the support of professionals.

    Free number 0800 18 19 20

33,226 people aged over 65, residing in the municipal territory, received a letter inviting them to register to benefit from personalized support from the Social Service during the heatwaves.

THE registrations remain open to the free number 0800 18 19 20, as well as via the email address @E-mail.

Let us also point out that tours are planned by the Social Service teams to transmit prevention messages, bring drinks or come to the aid of people living on the street.
