Since 2020, 29 streets and locations have been feminized in the territory of the City of Geneva. This approach aims to increase the visibility of women in public space and reflects the desire to highlight their contributions, still too often unknown, to Geneva’s history.
She also responds to motion M-2536, accepted by the Grand Council in 2019who demanded the change of name of 100 streets in the canton within three years. The objective set by the City of around thirty streets to be feminized was thus achieved.
During this process, the principle of naming a street or a square in homage to Grisélidis Réal as well as Ruth Fayon has been validated by the Council of Statebut proposals for selected locations were declined. In order to bring these projects which remained on hold to fruition, two new sites, which do not involve any change of addresses, have been identified for these personalities who have, each in their own way, marked local history and contributed to the influence of Geneva. .
A file will be submitted at the end of October to the Cantonal Nomenclature Commission (CCN). The latter, after examining the file, will issue a notice to the Council of State, which will make the final decision.
Place Grisélidis-REAL
Internationally recognized personality, writer, painter, prostitute and defender of the rights of sex workers, Grisélidis Real has left its mark on the history of the Pâquis district and Geneva. She is buried in the Cemetery of the Kings. The desire to pay tribute to him in public space follows municipal motion M-1532.
The City has identified a place currently without an official name in the Pâquis district, at the corner of rue Philippe-PLANTAMOUR and rue du Léman. Please note that the names of these streets will not be modified and that no change of address should be made..
Place Ruth-FAYON
Born in 1928 and died in 2010, Ruth Fayon survived deportation and concentration camps during World War II. Based in Geneva in 1959, she tirelessly bore witness to the horrors of Nazism in the region’s schools.
For her fight against Holocaust denial and her determination to pass on the memory of the Shoah to new generations, in 2006 she received the “Grateful Geneva” medal, as well as the French Legion of Honor. Her name was selected as part of the feminization project at the suggestion of CICAD (Intercommunity Coordination against Anti-Semitism and Defamation).
The City proposes to rename Place de la Petite-Fusterie in his honor, located in the city center, towards Rue du Rhône and in the continuation of Place de la Fusterie. Its change of name would not modify the name of Place de la Fusterie and would avoid possible confusion between these similar names. Furthermore, no address is referenced at this location.
