Created in 1954, the UNHCR Nansen distinction for refugees pays tribute to individuals, groups or organizations whose action goes well beyond their professional obligations to protect refugees, displaced or stateless people. It is fully in line with the values held by the City of Geneva.
2024 winners
This year, five women are honored by this distinction awarded by the UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency.
There world winner 2024, Sister Rosita Milesiis a Brazilian nun, lawyer and social worker who has defended the rights and dignity of forcibly displaced people for almost 40 years.
The other four women – a Burkinabè activist, a Syrian social entrepreneur, a Sudanese volunteer aid worker and a Nepalese campaigner to end statelessness – were named regional winners.
The Mont-Blanc bridge in UNHCR colors
On October 14 and 15, the Mont Blanc bridge is adorned with the colors of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to honor these five exceptional women.
