Although aware of the need for La Poste to adapt to new uses and a difficult economic context, the Administrative Council struggles to understand the strategy put forward by the yellow giant, which is proposing the closure of nearly one in five postal offices across the country.
It should be remembered that La Poste remains a company in the hands of the Confederation, supposed to fulfill a public service mission. The possibility for everyone, including people with reduced mobility or seniors, in urban areas as well as in the countryside, to continue to benefit from the essential services provided by La Poste at an acceptable distance is a necessity, which must be be weighed against the demands of profitability.
Wave of closures
This wave of closures is only a new stage, after several successive reorganizations which the City of Geneva and many Swiss municipalities have systematically opposed, unfortunately most often without being heard by the management bodies of La Poste. Taking these precedents into account, it is more than likely that the closures announced this week will not be the last. If certain services are to be taken over by partner subsidiaries, the continuation of benefits is by no means guaranteed.
The Administrative Council therefore asked the Chairman of the Board of Directors of La Poste to reconsider his strategy and calls on the Federal Council to act to stop this spiral of degradation of public serviceensuring the maintenance of a quality postal service across the country.
