More information on the exhibition website

The “Encounters” exhibition gives voice to those who reconnect with their cultural heritage in museums. Imagined from a double will of Geneva Museum of Ethnography (MEG) to question the authority of museums over collections and to dialogue with the descendants of objects from its own collections.

    12 people, 12 objects, 12 stories

The MEG invites twelve people from different communities to tell their personal storiesimportant and often moving which connect them to the MEG collections. Each guest chose an object from their original community from the museum’s collections. The link between them is represented in a photographic portrait and is discussed in an interview.

Discover these twelve stories that were unknown until today. Powerful stories linked to a place, an experience, a present or lost connection, a heritage that the MEG wishes to pass on in turn.

    Role of image

The “Encounters” exhibition also questions the museum authority and the role of the image, whether through portrait or video. For several years, the MEG has been leading a critical reflection around museum photographic practices and anthropological which still present the objects of the collections decontextualized on a white background.

This type of “identity” perspective refers to the practice of 19th century anthropologists to photograph ethnic groups for classification purposes. The approach of the “Rencontres” exhibition seeks to divert this technique by giving participants the power to choose how they are photographedwith the desire to bring out their intimate links with objects through selected scenes.

To discover from November 1, 2024 to August 16, 2026.
