Since the Post Office announced, on October 29, 2024, that it wanted close 170 offices in Switzerlanda wind of anger rose across the entire territory. In a few days, more than 40 municipalities created the Alliance of French-speaking communes against the closure of post offices, in order to join forces to fight against this decision.
Municipalities invest massively in the development of their territory to maintain services, activity and social life. La Poste, conversely, is moving further and further away from the mission that citizens expect of it: proximity to its users, extensive services, easy access for all.
One of the essential pillars of a living community
Post offices constitute one of the essential pillars of a living communityas can be shops, nurseries or even restaurants. Their disappearance is social and political nonsense. Citizens have no use for the Post Office’s major investment projects and partnerships if they do not serve to ensure the sustainability of its core business, as close as possible to users.
Therein lies the challenge: redefining the missions of the Post Office according to the expectations of citizens, who no longer understand the orientations of this institution and feel let down.
This is why the municipalities of the Alliance decided to mobilize, firstly so that the Motion 24.3816 “Clarify the universal service mandate and the scope of activity of the Post Office before any new restructuring or dismantling” be adopted on December 5 at the Council of States. A concerted letter will be sent today to the French-speaking elected representatives of this chamber from the post offices of the participating municipalities.
