The Department of Social Cohesion and Solidarity (DCSS) has unveiled its new youth policy. A road map was developed based on an in-depth analysis of the reality of today’s young people and the issues they face.
Ten objectives to meet the needs of 12-25 year olds
This document, to be downloaded at the bottom of the page, highlights ten goals aimed at meeting the needs and aspirations of 12-25 year olds. Among these objectives:
- support the empowerment of young people,
- prevent risky behavior,
- offer a suitable leisure offer,
- promote youth participation,
- fight against discrimination and violence.
During the legislature, a number of measures have already been carried out. Notably:
- the establishment of a nocturnal prevention system for night correspondents to ease tensions,
- the opening of the Manège en Ville socio-cultural activity space and the La Concorde neighborhood center,
- the organization of a “Girls skate day” at the Plainpalais skatepark.
Help for employability
One of the strong, unprecedented and innovative measures that comes into force from December 1, 2024is a one-off financial assistance for employability young people living in the City of Geneva.
According to the High School of Management, mandated by the DCSS to look into the issue, 350 young people could benefit from this one-off aid, capped at CHF 1,000.- per year and per young person.
This amount will make it possible to participate in essential purchases for job huntingsuch as:
- computer equipment or clothing suitable for job interviews,
- registration in a training course,
- obtaining a driving license,
- possibly language stay.
The total amount of this financial assistance amounts to CHF 350,000 per calendar year.
Partnership with Autonomia
The young people concerned will also be able to receive a social support to improve their employability.
To implement this measure, a partnership was developed with the association Autonomy. She will receive requests from young people, by telephone and email.
The objective of this service is to reduce the impact of financial insecurity affecting young people in their journey towards employment, to strengthen their capacity for action and self-esteem, to reduce the distance between them and municipal institutions, as well as to fight against non-recourse.
New attention will be paid specifically to 12-14 year olds, in order to provide them with increased support at this pivotal age.
Other measures are planned in the future, particularly in terms of housing.
