Located in the city center, at the foot of the Old Town, the Rôtisserie district is today an entity that we no longer see, whose urban qualities have deteriorated.
By organizing this development competition, the City of Geneva wanted to offer a new public pedestrian space for users, residents of the neighborhoodwhile placing soft mobility and climate challenges at the heart of the discussions.
Reclaiming public space
The “Promenades” project proposes to transform the street by maintaining its link with the structuring elements of the heritage, but also by opening perspectives towards new plural uses and promoting links between different users.
THE vegetated islands under the trees invite rest or social interactions. Street furniture, judiciously placed, offers great flexibility to people who live, run businesses or are passing through, allowing them to make use of the space at different times of the day.
Link with the Old Town
THE choice of paving stone as the only street covering will connect the Rôtisserie sector to the perimeter of the Old Town. The subtlety and simplicity of its treatment, from facade to facade, without sidewalk, and punctuated by green islands, will offer a calm space inviting to stroll.
The finish of the coverings will be compatible with the movement of people with reduced mobility.
Vegetating at different scales
There Vegetation in the area will be reinforced with new plantations. The project proposes to plant and revegetate, paying particular attention to the conditions that favor the development of trees (installation of open joints, Stockholm pits, etc.).
Of the perennial plants will be sown at the foot of the trees, also helping to develop biodiversity. THE grass and moss can grow between the paving stonesnear the trees, thus creating a dialogue between mineral and plant.
