These 70 hectares (equivalent to 140 football fields) are located mainly on three sites, in Bois des Frères, in la Bâtie and in Nant-de-Châtillon. The work will take place from January to February. In accordance with the “Forest Management Plan of the City of Geneva”, the following forestry interventions are notably scheduled:
Brothers Woods
- Selective thinning will take place to promote the natural regeneration of the forest.
Bois de la Bâtie
- The felling of dead trees and the removal of oaks affected by the wood-eating collybia fungus (Collibia fusipes) will make the paths safer. These interventions are carried out following a health report carried out in 2024.
Châtillon Wood
- A thinning cut will be carried out along the edge over a width of 10 meters to encourage the entry of light and allow the natural regeneration of the forest.
Since the middle of the 20th century, the Geneva forest has no longer been managed in coppice (traditional method) but in high forest (more ecological): trees from different generations mix, the oldest and most imposing being now a hundred years old. These sites are refuges for many animal and plant species, thus actively contributing to biodiversity.
Like all green spaces in the City of Geneva, the forests are maintained ecologically and without chemicals and have had the FSC label since 2018.. This label, recognized internationally, guarantees that certified forests are managed sustainably.
