Temporary reception of Servette FC in Vessy: work begins | City of Geneva

In this context, in accordance with memorandum of understanding which notably unites the Canton of Geneva and the City of Geneva since June 2022, the transformation and creation of two football fields have begun in order to maintain the site’s reception capacities for amateur clubs.

For several years, Servette FC has been looking for a stable infrastructure for training with his first professional team. Until now, the recent Swiss football vice-champion has been juggling variable training locations, spread across the entire canton, without the possibility of planning.

    New natural grass pitch

After an agreement reached between the Canton, the City of Geneva and Servette FC and signed in June 2022, major work has just started on the Vessy site. It is planned that the Vessy Sports Center, owned by the City of Geneva, will be operational from the summer of 2024 two additional synthetic fields (T4 and T5, see plan in appendix) intended for local clubs. At the end of this first phase of work, a new natural grass pitch (T3) will be built for Servette FC and intended only for its first team for 10 years. This last piece of land will be delivered in summer 2025. All this work will be financed by the Canton, to the tune of 8 million francs.

“Thanks to this collaboration, the Canton is able to meet its legal commitments arising from the law on the distribution of tasks (LRT-3), and to show its attachment to conditions adapted for the training of a professional team” , underlined Thierry Apothéloz, State Councilor responsible for social cohesion.

For Marie Barbey-Chpuis, administrative advisor of the City of Geneva in charge of sports, “the two new synthetic fields will allow the City to offer nearly 60 hours of additional use each week to the approximately 50 resident football teams in Vessy, while offering Servette FC the opportunity to train in optimal conditions.”

Administrative advisor to the City of Geneva in charge of development, Frédérique Perler recalled the satisfaction of the partners at having found a pragmatic solution, beneficial for Geneva sport, and concerned with the impact both environmental and in terms of nuisance.

This development work is the direct consequence of the refusal in November 2019, by popular vote, of the zone modification bill relating to the football center on the Pré-du-Stand site. The Vessy site therefore constitutes one of the temporary solutions for hosting the first Servette team (lasting 10 years from the end of the work), alongside the project planned for the Evaux sports center and intended to the club’s Academy (Servette juniors), currently before the courts.

Let us also point out that upon the departure of Servette FC, the T3 land will be handed over to the City of Geneva.
