To mark this commemoration, Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis will invite key actors for the implementation of international humanitarian law to join him on stage to perform a symbolic gesture together: straightening chairs, placed on the ground in a disorderly manner.
Through this gesture, which illustrates the need to act and restore stability, the guests will reaffirm the central place reserved for Geneva Conventions and their importance, particularly for victims of armed conflict.

Chair information
The chairs were designed by the FDFA for this occasion and are inspired by the famous Broken Chair of the Place des Nations. The objective of this symbol, known in Geneva and well beyond, is to underline the rejection of violence against civilians. It echoes the raison d’être of the Geneva Conventions: the protection of people who do not or no longer take part in hostilities.
The chairs will be unveiled on August 26, 2024. After the event, they will be placed in places with an international characterin order to perpetuate their message of humanity.
