The Cities of Lausanne, Geneva and Bussigny outraged by the announcements made by Tamedia | City of Geneva

The executives of the signatory cities are shocked and worried by Tamedia’s announcements made today. Meaning in particular the closure of two printing works in Switzerland and the elimination of hundreds of positions in editorial offices and printing works.

The undersigned note that these decisions will have a particularly negative impact in French-speaking Switzerland. The closure of the Bussigny printing works will eliminate jobs and certainly precipitate the end of real know-how in French-speaking Switzerland linked to the printing professions. This closure will also have consequences for other press titles such as Le Temps or Lausanne Cité currently printed in Bussigny.

Furthermore, the job cuts within French-speaking titles worry the executives of the signatory cities regarding the assurance of quality information and a diversity of points of view. It seems like magic to be able to ensure the publication of newspapers with editorial offices still missing a large part of their members who have suffered repeated cuts and an increase in workload for several years.

    Endangering the diversity of information

Today’s announcements also pose a threat to the existence of the Tribune de Genève, an institution of the French-speaking press that is more than a century old. The impoverishment of the media landscape towards which TX group is tending is particularly worrying and endangers the diversity of information, a necessary pillar for the proper functioning of our democratic institutions.

While TX group is doing well and paying dividends to its shareholders, it is not understandable that it is laying off staff.

The executives of the signatory cities are waiting for the management of TX group to agree to meet the public authorities, as the Cantons of Vaud and Geneva have asked them to do, so that negotiations can begin.
