Launch of the new Long Life Policy | City of Geneva

The City of Geneva’s Long Life Policy was presented this Monday, September 9, 2024 during a press conference. The opportunity for the Mayor, Christina Kitsos, in charge of the Department of Social Cohesion and Solidarity, to present the main axes of this new policyas well as current and future measures aimed at improving the quality of life of seniors.

Promoting quality of life at all ages

From the “Long Life Policy” to the “Old Age Policy”, there is not just a semantic change, but a desire to promote a quality of life at all agesregardless of the origin, status or socio-economic condition of the people.

THE aging of the Geneva population presents many challenges. We often talk about the percentage of elderly people. It is also necessary to remember the socio-economic inequalities which are widening, particularly affecting the retired peopleand even more women due to salary disparities and increased family responsibilities during their working lives.

At the same age, a person can be completely independent, in excellent health and have the capacity to participate fully in social life or, conversely, be in a situation of isolation, with degraded health.

Seniors can also experience discrimination linked to age, gender, origin, status, etc. The period of Covideven if it is behind us, has also weakened the elderly. Likewise, the climate change has a significant impact on their health and quality of life.

The City of Geneva takes into account the diversity of life paths.

Its actions are primarily focused on support for people in vulnerable situationswhile promotingcommitment and the participation of all seniors in the life of the City.

An action plan in 30 measures

The Long Life Policy provides for a detailed action plan around 30 measures, aimed at strengthening existing services, while taking on new challenges, whether it is combating isolation, combating non- recourse to benefits, or to encourage citizen participation.

This approach is intended to be inclusive, by directly involving beneficiaries and working closely with local and international partners.
