    Beach volleyball, 3×3 basketball, athletics, urban fitness: the Varembé Sports Center is gaining muscle | City of Geneva

    In addition to the three existing football fields (two synthetic fields in Varembé and one located at the bottom of Parc Trembley), a table tennis club and a swimming pool, the Varembé Sports Center now welcomes following sports equipment:

    • 2 new 3×3 basketball courts open to the public (instead of the hard basketball court);
    • 1 new beach volleyball court open to the public (instead of the hard court);
    • 1 modernized athletics area: shot put, 4 100m tracks, triple jump, high and long jump, open to the public and to the Geneva Athletics Association, as well as to its member clubs;
    • 1 new urban fitness: a warm-up and training area to work on agility, balance, strengthening muscles through steps and abdominals, etc.;
    • all decorated with varied areas such as a gathering point (for schools for example) with an abstract shape (representing a target) to use according to one’s imagination, or even colorful zig zag corridors which are an illustrated athletics track and unstructured, allowing people to be directed from one part of the site to another.

    “This project is part of a program to modernize and renovate sports facilities in order to meet the growing needs of clubs, schools and residents who are increasingly participating in sports in public spaces,” recalls Marie Barbey-Chpuis, administrative advisor in charge of the Department of Security and Sports.

    The Varembé Stadium had not benefited from any renovation work since its commissioning in 1987. The project which ended this summer, after around a year of work, enabled the renovation, security and installation of standards of the soft ground area, intended for athletics and multisport. The surrounding wall, fences and drainage have also been completely renovated.

    New lighting poles

    New lighting poles and high-efficiency LED projectors have been installed, which will provide substantial energy savings and reduce light pollution in surrounding buildings.

    Finally, the green areas adjacent to the soft ground were enlarged to give more space to the trees and their roots.

    “Having only undergone small adjustments for 40 years, this complete overhaul had become more than necessary to meet current technical and operating requirements, as well as for reasons of safety and comfort for sportswomen and sportsmen. », According to Frédérique Perler, administrative advisor in charge of the Department of Planning, Construction and Mobility.

    This work will make it possible to offer users (public, sports associations, as well as schools for sports days in particular) a sports space perfectly suited to training, championships and games.
