Since the 1970s, Geneva has been the scene of numerous mobilizations for rights and visibility lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex, queer people or belonging to other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTIQ+).
This dynamism has been perpetuated in a network of associations and collectives that is still very active today. Aware of the value of this heritage, in 2019 the City launched the “LGBTIQ+ Memories” program in order to raise awareness of local LGBTIQ+ history. “These movements have contributed to making our city a pioneer in the fight against discrimination and for the respect and promotion of human rights. In addition to promoting this heritage, LGBTIQ+ history month aims to preserve the memory of these struggles, which are part of our common history“, specifies Alfonso Gomez, Administrative Advisor in charge of sustainable development.
A varied program and an awards ceremony
There opening night will take place on October 3at the Geneva Library, with a round table which will allow us to explore the issues of collecting, preserving and promoting LGBTIQ+ memories.
Also on the program, a discussion with the protesting Archives at the Espace Ville de Genève, queer visits to theexhibition “Memories. Geneva in the colonial world” at the Geneva Museum of Ethnography, the screening of the memorial film “Les invisibles” as part of the activities program for seniors of the Social Service or theaward of the LGBTIQ+ Memoirs Prizewhich since last year has rewarded one of the historical films programmed as part of the Everybody’s Perfect festival.
Other events will draw on the archives of lesbian movements, with a queer goose game creation workshopas well as collective listening to the podcast “1986, 800 lesbians in Geneva” and one interactive installation to rediscover the archives of Radio Caniculedeveloped by the Our History Matters collective.
Finally, the Afrolitt platform will offer the Museum of Art and History a meeting and discussion around the book “AfroQueer” by Fabrice Nguena, which presents 25 portraits of LGBTIQ+ people of Afro-descendants.
