In stride, A new series of proposals have been identified by a working group made up of historians, representatives of the canton and the town, In anticipation of the submission of a file to the Cantonal Nomenclature Commission (CCN) in September 2021.

14 new proposals to increase the visibility of women

The 14 proposals which are now formulated underline the diversity of these women’s journeys which, at different times, contributed to the history of Geneva.

Writers, artists, defenders of the rights of people, scientists, doctors or journalists, They meet all the criteria to obtain a street in their name and deserve this official recognition.

The choice of street names and location identified for a change of name reflects:

    • the desire to delete duplicates,
    • The need to clarify the name of certain streets or street sections on municipal territory,
    • Historical consistency with the routes of identified women.

With the continuation of this process and as Alfonso Gomez, administrative advisor, “The City of Geneva wishes to continue to gradually increase the representation of women in public space and thus recognize the fact that Genevans are full -fledged citizens And that many of them have contributed to our collective history “.

The CCN will make a notice during its September session, which must then be validated by the Council of State. The persons and companies affected by these potential name changes are warned by mail of the current process. All the necessary information will be transmitted to them on time to facilitate this transition.

    The genesis of the project

Thanks to the commitment of historians of the University of Geneva and members of the L’Escouade association, 100 biographies of women who have died for over 10 years and having marked the history of Geneva and/or Switzerland – The two criteria set by the Cantonal Nomenclature Commission (CCN) to allocate street names – have been written.

100 plates were then produced and hung in the streets of Geneva under official street names. A series of mediation actions and the publication of a collection of biographies accompanied this project, which has experienced a strong impact.

Among the reactions that followed, a motion, the M-2536,, was deposited at the Grand Council, then accepted in June 2019. She asked the Council of State to renamewith the collaboration of the municipalities and within three years, at least 100 streets or places of importance With names of female personalities that have marked the Geneva story.
