Guided tours of the Châtelaine cemetery | City of Geneva

    The second cemetery of Geneva

Before the opening of the Châtelaine cemeterythere was only the Plainpalais cemetery in Geneva.

It was in 1854 that the City of Geneva acquired the plot of a former lazaretto in Châtelaine, founded in the 18th century, to create a new Catholic cemetery.

The cemetery (known as “du Lazaret”) became non-denominational in 1876, following the modification of cantonal legislation, and quickly opened to the entire population of the right bank. A few personalities rest there, like an Italian prima ballerina and the co-founder of a major watch brand. French and Belgian soldiers who died during the First World War are also buried there.
