Planetary limits at the heart of the 2nd Climate Week | City of Geneva

There 2nd edition of Climate Weeklaunched for the first time last year on the occasion of Mr. Alfonso Gomez’s year as Mayor, invites Genevans to better understand current issues.

The theme of planetary limits will be at the heart of the debates this year: of the 9 thresholds identified, 7 have already been crossed, notably that of climate change, the erosion of biodiversity, the fresh water cycle and even the ocean acidification. “As COP29 begins in a few days, the UN is once again sounding the alarm: national policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are far from sufficient to limit global warming.

Current efforts would lead to a 2.6% reduction in global emissions in 2030. This is almost 17 times less (!) than what the IPCC recommends to hope to limit global warming to 1.5°C”, notes Alfonso Gomez, Administrative Advisor in charge of sustainable development To implement relevant solutions, a global vision of ecological issues, all intrinsically linked, is necessary.
