Organized by the Bubble Ethic association in partnership with the City of Geneva, this free event will bring together creators from the region, experts, Geneva brands and citizens engaged around the challenges and solutions for more ethical and responsible fashion.
The textile industry is the second most polluting industry in the world. It is responsible for the depletion of many non-renewable resources, due to the enormous quantities of water and energy used and the significant volumes of greenhouse gases it releases into the atmosphere.
In this context, faced with the environmental and social challenges that arise regarding our consumption habits, the first edition of Wardrobes offers a program focused on information and awareness, while presenting solutions for dressing differently. “Global clothing sales doubled between 2000 and 2015, while the lifespan of clothing is now half as long as 20 years ago. The current model has reached its limits. But alternatives exist“, notes Alfonso Gomez, Administrative Advisor in charge of sustainable development.
Information and awareness
The exhibition “Fast fashion, who pays the price?”designed by the association Public Eyeand the projection of documentary “Mammoths didn’t wear crop tops”directed by Léa Camilleri aim to raise awareness among the population about the impacts of the textile industry. A “Slow Fashion Corner” will welcome mini-conferences which will bring together experts and professionals to address the challenges and solutions of more ethical and ecological fashion. The show will also include a clothing collection pointthus offering visitors the opportunity to give a second life to their clothes for the benefit of Social Locker Room.
Discovery of the local ecosystem
The GARDEROBES show offers a space of visibility to the many people and structures working for more sustainable fashion in Geneva. The public will be able to explore the numerous exhibitor stands to discover local products and solutions that have less impact on the environment and see concretely how this commitment is translated into the collections. On Saturday evening, a parade will highlight ethical creations and local know-how.
Learning and putting into practice
Children and adults will be able to learn about sustainable practices during a series ofparticipatory workshops. From the natural dye At weaving passing through theupcycling and the bio-materialsthese workshops will present concrete techniques to improve the lifespan of clothing. THE “Repair Café Couture” will allow you to have your clothes mended on site with the help of experienced seamstresses. Finally, a competitionorganized in collaboration with the Department of Public Instruction (DIP), will highlight the work of 17 classes of 8 and 9P as well as the Orientation Cycle from the canton of Geneva who accepted the challenge of creating an artistic work by recycling old clothes.
A rich, friendly and inspiring program
It has been several years now since theBubble Ethic association works in the field of sustainable development in general and sustainable fashion in particular. “Thanks to the partnership with the City of Geneva, this first general public edition of the GARDEROBES show at IceBergues was able to be set up as part of the climate week. This is an opportunity to discover other ways of consuming and thus support a local and environmentally friendly economy,” concludes Jeanne von Segesser, co-founder of Bubble Ethic.
