Passerelle du Mont-Blanc: the Administrative Council takes note of the popular decision | City of Geneva

The municipality regrets the abandonment of what would have constituted a strong architectural gesture and a consequent improvement in the comfort and safety of users of the Mont-Blanc bridge. Twelve years after the multidisciplinary competition which had designated it, this project, which was included in the master plans of the Canton and the City of Geneva as well as in the guiding image of the Harbor, was to be an important step towards a city more peaceful and constitute a response to the current strong development of active mobility.

Pending new solutions to improve traffic flows on the Mont-Blanc bridge and its surroundings, which no longer meet the needs of its various users, the Administrative Council regrets that the current situation is likely to continue for many years. additional years. The City of Geneva would however like to note the quality of the discussions held with the various parties who would have participated in more than half of the financing of this achievement (Confederation, Canton, private foundation), highlighting here a missed opportunity.

This refusal does not call into question the mobility strategies carried out by the City of Geneva, which will continue to seek solutions to respond to the challenges of the climate emergency and to encourage soft mobility.

“Pedestrian and cyclist traffic is clearly not satisfactory to date in this sector located in the very center of our city,” underlines Frédérique Perler, magistrate responsible for planning, construction and mobility. The bridge having been refused, I call on opponents of all sides to take their responsibilities, to seek and obtain solutions from the Canton, which will necessarily involve a redistribution of the spaces available on the Mont-Blanc bridge in favor of active mobility. .”
