The Media Support Grants, which this year have a budget of 61,200 francs, constitute a key action of the media support strategy of the City of Geneva.
At the end of the deadline set for November 1, 2024, eleven projects were received and examined by the committee, which unanimously selected four based on the criteria established in the Conditions of attribution: contribution to Geneva civic and political life, educational relevance, feasibility and situation of the media.
In view of the projects received and to ensure the feasibility of those selected, the jury decided, after in-depth analysis of all the proposals, to award this year only 55,000 francs of the total amount.
This year’s projects for intergenerational radio workshops were selected Radio Vostok ; exchange platform and discussion on the circular economy proposed by Large Network in connection with his magazine Reloved; continuation of the “Mediation in a world in question” events of the Maileach receiving support of 15,000 francs, as well as the Listening Evenings offered by the Association Reportingactive in the production of journalistic podcast series, to which 10,000 francs are allocated.
The jury can only note this year the effects of the worrying situation in which the French-speaking media are located. He notes that the proposals coming from smaller media, subject to different constraints, were much more extensive and original than those from larger media, often incomplete in terms of the files submitted or not corresponding to all of the criteria. selection. Without completely explaining it, the jury can only assume that the current situation does not offer the adequate framework for journalists from major media subject to immediate financial pressures to develop quality complementary projects, standing out from the crowd and encouraging innovation. He also notes with regret, as he had already done last year, that these latest files were clearly developed more by the marketing department than by their editorial team, to the detriment of the journalistic aspects.
The choice not to award the entire amount comes from a desire to primarily reward the projects deemed the most deserving, without reducing their subsidy to accommodate an additional winner. It is now expected that the supported projects will be completed and completed: a regular evaluation of the progress of the various initiatives will be carried out by the City.
THE jury 2024 was composed of Philippe Amez-Droz, lecturer and researcher at the University of Geneva, media economist; Céline Garcin, independent journalist responsible for editorial content at the City of Vernier; Gilles Labarthe, Doctor in Journalism and Media (PhD, University of Neuchâtel) and Yannick Richter, information officer of the Administrative Council, representing the City
