    Power games and contemporary art

    One of the loves of the Grand Theater of Geneva is to modernizes opera and ballet by bringing them into the present day, with a theme that is particularly topical: power games. Power, whether political or more intimate, is a common thread running through all the works presented in the new season.

    The program includes operas such as Don Carlosplus a world premiere, Justicewhich is being staged for the first time in early 2024. “The Grand Théâtre aims to host operas and ballets that reflect our world today. With what we are going through at the moment, I believe that the theme of power is highly relevant,” says Aviel Cahn, the institution’s director.

    Visual and contemporary artists are being invited to take a sideways look at opera and ballet and to forge a link between them. Creatives such as Marina Abramovic, who is responsible for the concept and set design for Ravel’s famous Bolero ballet. Other key figures on the international art scene include Adel Abdessemed for Saint Francis of Assisiand Anthony Gormley for the scenography of Noetic.

    The beach

    As usual, The beach is opening its doors to all manner of visitors, offering fun, offbeat as well as surprising activities linked to the works on display.

    These include the “Sleepover“, which invites the public to spend the night in the theater, musical performances for young audiences, the aperopera and aperitifsthe musical Great brunch (nine per season), Cineopera in collaboration with the Grütli Cinemas, backstage visits, and ballet rehearsals held in public.
