    The 3rd edition of the Mayors’ Forum in Geneva | City of Geneva

    There 3rd edition of the Mayors’ Forum opened on Monday October 2, 2023 at the Palais des Nations.

    The City of Geneva is proud to host this event, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE)which brings together the mayors around the world around topics like regeneration and the urban resilience as well as the sustainable urban development.

    Declaration of Mayors for better prevention, preparation and response to pandemics

    On this occasion, Mr. Sami Kannan, member of the Administrative Council of the City of Geneva and President of the Global Cities Hubofficially handed over, in the company of Mr. Ricardo Rio, Mayor of the City of Braga in Portugal, the Declaration of Mayors for better prevention, preparation and response to pandemics to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

    This declaration calls on States to strengthen support for local governments in terms of resources and expertise so that they can implement policies and regulations at the local level for a preventiona preparation and an response to pandemics more efficient.

    The document is signed by more than 70 mayors from 44 countries.

    What is the Mayors Forum?

    In 2020the Member States of the UNECE decided to create a Forum of Mayors (FoM), thus recognizing the important role of cities and local authorities in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

    In 2023 it was decided that it would become a real UN body, subsidiary of the UNECE Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management (CUDHLM). Made up of local governments, this new body promotes inclusive multilateralism in the areas ofeducationof the health and theenvironment.

    The Global City Hub

    THE Global Cities Hub continues to play a crucial role in strengthen the role of cities in the international cooperation and to make Geneva a city ​​diplomacy center. This association under Swiss law, created with the support of the Confederation, the Canton and the City of Geneva, aims to play a role of facilitator between

    • cities around the world,
    • city ​​networks,
    • global governance entities present in Geneva.

    The objective is to strengthen – within international Geneva – the place of cities which have an essential role to play in managing global challenges.
