Media Support Grants 2023: the winners | City of Geneva

After a first pilot edition in 2020, this initiative with a budget of 60,000 francs will now take place annually. It constitutes one of the key actions of the media support strategy of the City of Geneva.

At the end of the deadline set for November 1, 2023, 11 projects were received and examined by the committee, which unanimously selected four based on the criteria established in the Conditions of attribution: contribution to Geneva civic and political life, educational relevance, feasibility and situation of the media.

This year, these are the mobile application projects of Radio Vostok; “Mediation in a world in question” of Mail; “The neighborhood notice” of Radio Lake as well as the “Webinar on Geneva digitalization” offered by The weather which were retained. These projects should come to fruition in the coming months. With this choice, the jury wanted to support varied and complementary actions.

    Economic fragility

The members of the jury warmly congratulate the winners. However, they express fear about the evolution of the media landscape, with certain projects evaluated seeming to be designed more with management issues or the search for external funding aimed at occasionally covering the salaries of journalists and occasional freelancers than projects editorials. This observation demonstrates the economic fragility of current media and the relevance of providing them with more support to ensure that the duty of information remains a priority in the face of pressure for profitability.

The total amount available was distributed equally among the beneficiaries. According to the jury, the choice of a limited number of winners by granting them the full sums requested guarantees each project greater success and greater viability. It is therefore expected that these will be carried out successfully and to completion: a regular assessment The progress of the various initiatives will be carried out by the City.

The 2023 jury was composed of Philippe Amez-Droz, Master of teaching and research, media economist; Céline Garcin, independent journalist responsible for editorial content at the City of Vernier; Gilles Labarthe, Doctor in Journalism and Media (PhD, University of Neuchâtel) and Yannick Richter, information officer of the Administrative Council, representing the City of Geneva.
